Martial Arts Store
Martial arts stores are typically associated with larger martial arts schools in established locations. The stores however as one might expect typically carry only those items that are related to the art taught at the school. This is without question a reflection of the market they serve but also limits the students and the schools new forms, styles, and training techniques they might otherwise be unfamiliar with.
Out of personal experience, I was largely ignorant of the variety of martial arts training gear until I a variety of online versions of the brick and mortar martial arts store. The stores of course appeal to all styles and the variety of uniforms, equipment, and gear not only produce greater training, buy a much deeper appreciation of the diversity of martial arts and the differing perspectives each holds.
For example, one store featured a Thai Kicking Shield. This was considerably different from the generic kicking shields I was accustomed to. My inquisitiveness led me to ask why which in turn revealed the emphasis and style of Muay Thai. Adding a particular kick and incorporating it in another form may raise headaches for instructors with fixed curriculum, but cannot grow the student body by keeping the material new and innovative.
It’s important to remember that the best martial arts store will have wide variety of lines but will also provide explanations and where appropriate the history and use of the product offerings they carry. Providing some history behind the product can often give the potential buyer a greater depth of appreciation and also give a sense that the item they are buying is not simply a trendy item, but something that while modernized provides the open student to something historically based.
The best martial arts store will carry range of martial arts supplies and equipment including punching bags, uniforms, sparring gear, shoes, books, DVDs, weapons, punching bags, and many other items. When shopping online it’s important to remember to look for Better Business Bureau memberships or some type of third party certification to insure you’re dealing with a reputable company and an established and recognized business.
